Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Ugh. I wanted to love this film, but ultimately it felt misguided, empty, aimless, pointless, and very much worthless.

My main gripes are that Leo should've been the main character (or both him and Pitt) but instead, we get a film that is fragmented, splintered into many meandering things, and 'world-building'. There is no real point or growth in any of the characters and the climax just feels like an abrupt ending. The film constantly cuts to showing, TV/Movie footage and other era-specific things that it seems like Tarantino was more interested in making a film about 1969 Hollywood rather than his cast?

The film is slow and monotonous, with many shots dragging on for too long because they can, and this is coming from someone who loves slow cinema. The structure of this entire film is also quite horrendous, with voice-over (which is completely useless and strangely added to tell information already on screen?) cutting the film, and memories constantly splintering the flow. The worst part is that Tarantino decided to 'focus' on three days of these people’s lives yet, he is constantly showing flashback or showing previous information to the point that those 'three days' end up feeling like a worthless restraint that adds nothing to the characters or to the plot or film. Also, there is a horrible time jump in there and what the fuck? It confuses me as to why you don't just play this out chronologically, it would've made everything simple, and it would've flowed better.

Also, this movie hardly feels like a narrative film at all. It's like a nearly 3hr Tarantino nerd out on how he knows and loves everything about this time period? With family guy level editing of inserts and memories. At least 30min of this film is simply showing or recreating shows or films from the past. The more I think of this film and its floppy incoherent structure the more elementary and rudimentary it is.

Obviously, this film has some great moments, all of them being when Pitt and Leo are together or interacting with people, but again, Leo and Pitt often feel secondary to the 'world'. I much rather would've loved a film that was just about these two men's relationship and career, instead of a collage, that amounts to absolutely nothing in the end.

Also, I want to say that the sets, costumes, and props were immaculate.

So, in ending

4/10 - Bad

I left the theater feeling pretty sad and disappointed, everyone keeps saying this film had so much heart, but so much of this film is just a highlight reel of the '60s and driving around and so little of the actual heart which is Leo & Pitt. I feel like you could cut at least an hour out of this film and effect nothing and I mean that quite literally. I feel bad giving a Tarantino flick such a low score... But I don't think I'd want to re-watch this, even for Leo's stunning performance.
