Moving (1993) - Film Review
This film is a bit of a rarity, decided to watch it as the reviews were pretty high, and the poster looked interesting... I had to watch it off the rarefilms website as it never released in the US.
So firstly, this film is very slow and methodic for anyone who doesn't like that you might as well turn around. I enjoyed most of this film. Like most great Japanese films, it has a great sense of theme, and it sticks with it. This film being about a young girl dealing with her parent's divorce.
There are a few scenes that I absolutely loved but then there were long stretches that were just too slow and repetitive for my tastes. Even though I didn't enjoy those parts of the film, I still loved watching it as I am a fanatic when it comes to seeing how other cultures operate and seeing a living breath Japan of the early '90s is simply wondrous to me,
I think for everyone else this might be too long and too little.
The visuals were great and restrained with some very interesting compositions. The film grain was delightful, the lighting and the performance of the young girl was also fantastic.
So, in ending
-- 7/10 - Good -
Like I said above, the movie is just too slow and too thin, I wish it had more emotions, more story, and more depth to pad out the structure of it. Still, for the hardcore lovers of Japanese cinema, it might be worth a watch.
