Trainwreck (2015) - Film Review
Raunchy, perverted, and vulgar, Trainwreck is not for everyone but, after the mid-point it grows some heart. Is it worth watching though??
Let’s start with the story and screenplay.
The story follows a female journalist (played by Amy Schumer) who writes for an oddly perverted men's journal. When not writing she goes out, a lot. This involves a ton of drinking, pot smoking and quite a few one-night stands. Until she gets tasked to write a piece on a sports doctor (played by Bill Hader) and thus begins the central love story.
Interestingly this is Schumer’s first screenplay, and she handles the task well. The jokes and humor cut deep into perversion, but instead of it feeling hollow she manages to translate that into an actual character dynamic, so it never feels dirty to be dirty.
Speaking of sex. I admire how honest and openly her characters sex life is portrayed in the film. It really cements how she uses sex as a negative way of coping and self-destructing. It is a topic barely explored in films especially with women.
Her script also effectively shows how irresponsible, uncaring and un-confident the main character is. She shows the origin of her ideals through her father in the opening scene of the film. Her father being a future mirror image of her.
After the mid-point Schumer tries to tackle more depth with the father and sister and even with the love portion, and she succeeds. The film grows a heart as it continues and though it wasn't a huge emotional pivot, it was nice. The script didn't dig nearly as deep as I would have liked into the fundamental issues of the characters, but the warmth of the heart of the film was enough to add a nice overtone.
The acting in the film was decent across the board. Most of the supporting cast have good comedic timing with their jokes and delivery.
This is the first time I've seen Schumer perform and I was impressed. She played the role well and hit the emotive cues effectively too.
Bill Hader does well as the love interest and moral compass of the relationship. I'm a huge fan of Hader so his lines and performance were all gold to me.
I'm not a fan of the LeBron James skits and scenes. I hate seeing famous non-actors doing cameos. They're distracting and it pulls me out of the movie, and worse, all his scenes could have been scrapped and it wouldn't have any ‘meaningful’ impact on the story.
And before I wrap up, we can talk about Judd Apatow, The director of this film.
He's a veteran of comedy films, producing and writing tons of them over the past decade. His directing filmography includes, ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’, ‘Knocked Up’, ‘Funny People’ and his most recent ‘This Is 40’
So, in terms of directing the film is extremely basic, and straight cut, with the most obvious framing and compositions which is typical of Judd Apatow, but I do consider this the weakest point of the film. Not pushing the visual story is dumb in a medium that is extremely visual. What we have here is the definition of uncreative filmmaking, as all Apatow films tend to be.
The one unique thing is that Apatow did not write this film. All his previous films were exclusively written by himself. So honestly Schumer’s script is what gives this film spirit and originality. This easily makes Trainwreck his best film.
Maybe Schumer’s next script can be directed by her as well as I bet that would’ve made an entirely better film.
So in ending..
6/10 - Decent
Raunchy, Vulgar, and Perverted. Amy Schumer's First screenplay of a TrainWreck Finding love, Grows heart as it continues. The comedy cuts deep at times but falls flat at others. It has a well written lead character with depth and emotion and performed well by Schumer herself. Unfortunately, Its Directed generically by Judd Apatow with no real creativity. Making it a slightly better than average R-rated Rom-com.
